Here's a chronological list of all major post apocalyptic games and MMOs. If you see anything missing or unfitting, please leave a reply and I'll update this list.

Image Roadwar 2000 (1987,Adverture) Image Post-apocalyptic strategy game by Westwood Studios, later to become famous for Dune II, where you control a gang of warriors traveling across, battling mutants and other gangs and looting towns.

Image Wasteland (1988,RPG) Image Wasteland takes place in the future after the nuclear holocaust of World War III. You guide a band of Desert Rangers from town to town, gradually uncovering a sinister plot that threatens what's left of mankind. Wasteland used a skill-based system in conjunction with traditional character attributes to achieve goals and get past obstacles. It is this skill-based system that set Wasteland apart from most other role-playing games created up until then.

Image Mad Max (1990,Driving) Image for the NES. You are Mad Max. You drive your Interceptor through the post-apocalyptic wastelands and fight bandits. The game introduction is the speech from the beginning of the movie Mad Max 2 (a.k.a The Road Warrior), telling you how the world ended and how The Road Warrior, lost everything by "the roar of an engine" and how he in the wastelands "learned to live again". The game is played in a top-down view where you move your car to attack enemy cars and pick up fuel tanks (if run out of fuel the game is over).

Image Badlands (1990,Driving) Image Badlands continued the Super Sprint lineage, but moved the game into a futuristic post-apocalyptic setting. The races consist of 3 souped-up cars toughing it out over 4 laps on one of the 8 tracks, which are viewed from above. Two human players can take part, but only the winner continues without using up credits, so you will only see the early races in two-player mode. You are armed with guns, which can be used to slow opposing cars. During the races spanners can be collected, which are then cashed in for upgraded turbos, improved weaponry and engine upgrades. Hazards on the later tracks include ramps, bridges, buildings collapsing onto the track and barriers which open and close in a random sequence.

Image Fountain of Dreams (1990,RPG) Image Following on the popularity of Wasteland, Electronic Arts released this unofficial "sequel", using a modified version of the Wasteland game engine. Fountain of Dreams takes place several decades after a nuclear bombardment has caused the state of Florida to break off from the mainland and become an isolated island community. The survivors of the war have split into several opposing factions, and life on the island of Florida is constantly threatened both by the ever present threat of radiation-induced mutation and by the Killer Clowns, a group of deranged and heavily armed marauders descended from circus performers stranded on the island by the war. When the Clowns murder the only man with the knowledge to stop the spread of the mutation, it becomes your task to locate a cure to the mutation before it overtakes your group of survivors as well as what's left of humanity on the island.

Image Bad Blood (1990,Adventure) Image A nuclear war has turned the world into a wasteland. The pure-blooded humans have retreated in large cities while mutants live in small villages on the plains where they make a living by hunting the many monsters. Now one of the human leaders, Lord Dominix, wants to start a war to wipe out all the "bad-blooded" mutants. Your village chief has assigned you with the task of preventing this war. Bad Blood is a top-down action-adventure.

Image Crystalis (1990,RPG) Image from SNK is known as END DAY. A great war encircles the globe and brings about an end to civilization. The surviving humans concluded that they could never repeat their mistakes and build a great tower in the sky to watch over the world and act accordingly to combat "evil". 100 years have passed since then and a hidden cryogenic chamber in the mountains springs to life... Crystalis is a top-down action RPG. Starting from the cryogenic chamber, the player takes the role of a mysterious hero who must uncover the mystery of the tower.

Image Operation Overkill II (1990,RPG) Image The Earth's water supply tainted through generations of heavy industrial contamination, the remaining quantities of unspoiled drinking water were converted into stable water crystal form. Planetary defenses weakened in this time of environmental catastrophe, we mounted a valiant but ineffective defense against the water-crystal-seeking extraterrestrial Hydrites, led by their brutal general Overkill, in a conflict that reduced human civilization to a few obscure overlooked outposts and turned our remaining ecosystem into a radioactive wasteland, rife with tunnels and ruins and a fecund breeding-ground for disease, mutants and abominations.

Image Armour-Geddon (1991,Action) Image from Psygnosis about a post-nuclear holocaust Earth, where privileged group of humans have made it through the war in purpose-built shelters while rest of the humankind suffered. People outside, disapproving how they have been treated, have secretly constructed a laser cannon to even the score.

ImageTwilight 2000 (1991,Adventure) Image This tactical wargame/adventure is based on the GDW pencil and paper role-playing game. NATO and Warsaw Pact forces spent the latter part of the 1990s fighting a brutal war, which has turned Poland into a desolate radiation-riddled land, full of abandoned vehicles and weapons. The maniacal Baron Czarny wants to take over what's left of the country; you must stop him.

Image The Terminator 2029 (1992,Action) Image you play one of Col. John Connor's Special Operations Group tasked to destroy Skynet. You wear Advanced Combat Armor that has configurable slots for weapons which can be swapped on the fly. The gameplay is first-person but you are restricted to the 4 compass directions (e.g. turning left spins you around 90 degrees). The weapons slot feature is well used as you acquire new weapons and attachments as you progress through the game.

Image Outlander (1992,Driving) Image Mad Max inspired driving game from for Snes and Genesis.

Image Burntime (1993,Strategy) Image A strategy game by Austrian developer Max Design in a desert-covered world, cities are destroyed, and the end of every civilization is near. You want to rule the world. But there are other 3 characters with the same aim.

Could they be to blame for the disappearance of the sun and the resultant ice age? As a train captain, you must find out and overthrow them.

Image Perihelion: The Prophecy (1993,RPG) ImageImage A mix of post-apocalyptic and cyberpunk elements. The six characters under your control in this visually exotic RPG have been genetically engineered so as to be resistant to a virus which has been spread by an evil being in the futuristic land of Perihelion. In the game the player drives a taxicab through a post-apocalyptic city, picking up customers and killing enemies. Due to the gratuitous violence the game was controversial at the time of release.

ImageAlphaman (1995, RPG) Image A roguelike game in a futuristic/post-apocalyptic setting with a "light" RPG (few stats, no character creation, no distribution of points on level-up) and uses ASCII graphics; unlike other roguelike games, it offers you a choice of difficulty settings, allows you to save at any time and have multiple characters.
